Home Remodeling Steps for Creating More Space

January 27th, 2012

Home remodeling techniques for an apartment or for a house with limited space may be trickier compared with regular-sized spaces. For one, options can be limited since you have to consider the fact that you do not have that much space to let loose your creative ideas.

Homes Remodeling Steps

For another, your primary aim will always be to create more space so furniture selection will also require careful thought. If you want your apartment to look and feel roomier, here are some techniques you can use.

Double Purpose Furniture

Using multi-purpose pieces of furniture will help save space. You can replace your bulky furnishings with pieces that have more than one function. For example, you can use trunks to store items in and also use it as a coffee table or a bench. Items that create clutter, like books, toys, knick-knacks and others can be stored in this trunk.

Ottomans are also great for a small space since they can serve as seats or footrests, but they have space inside where things can be kept. In the kitchen, the bottom part of an island table can be used as cabinets where extra cutlery and dining sets can be kept. For bedrooms, a platform or storage bed would be best, with the bottom part serving as drawers where sheets and other bedding materials can be organized.

Vertical Storage

In a narrow room, the floor to ceiling space can be maximized to have more areas to store items. A wall shelf that spans the space from floor to ceiling is useful for a small dwelling. Books, entertainment systems and other materials you want to keep can be put in these shelves. Racks put at the corners can also help save space and create more room to move.

Also, do not forget those small spaces behind doors where you can hook space savers and where you can put papers, letters, keys and other materials that often create clutter. There are some who have also found out that hooking cooking utensils at the ceiling of a kitchen provides them with more breathing room.

Organizing Things

Most of the time, we keep a lot of materials in the house that we actually do not have any use for. Learn to let go of old things that are just there to create confusion. Have a general de-cluttering day at least every quarter when you identify the things that you need to keep and those that are just there because you have never thought of throwing them away.

Most of us just throw papers and documents into a drawer or put them on top of tables and then forget them altogether. Make it a point to throw away papers that are not needed anymore to avoid accumulating a big supply of thrash. Old toys that no one wants to play with can be donated to charities, as well as old clothes. You will be surprise how light your home feels after you have gotten rid of these useless things. House remodeling is not just about changing your furniture or repainting the walls, it is also about removing items that you have no use for.
