Tips on Choosing the Right Contractor for a Home Remodeling Project

January 24th, 2012

Unless you are highly-experienced in home remodeling, it is always better to hire a contractor to do the job for you. The contractor fee that you will be paying will be far less than the potential cost of a renovation gone wrong should you forsake the services of a contractor.

Choosing the Right Contractor for a Home Remodeling Project

However, it will be equally wasteful to hire a contractor who is not fit for the job. There are various steps you can take to make sure that you will be getting a good contractor and some of them are discussed here.

1. Go for experience. The more comprehensive the resume of the contractor is, the better he will be for the job. You may think that you will be saving on fees if you hire an inexperienced contractor, but more than likely, this decision will backfire. There is a reason why a contractor will have a lot of finished projects in his resume – it is because he is good at what he does.

2. Have more than one option. Considering more than one contractor for the job is the best way to find the right one. Always have more than one candidate and compare their work histories, their client feedback and their fees and choose the one that suits your need best.

3. Examine referrals. The more recent the contractor's client referrals are, the better. Some may have been good at their jobs two or three years ago, but it will not matter if they have not done a good job lately. Job history within six months or even up to a year prior to your own project will be enough to gauge the capability of the contractor. You may also want to call the contractor's past clients to get first hand feedback. Most of them do not mind getting their past jobs checked, particularly if they knew they have nothing to worry about.

4. Put everything in writing. Legal documents will protect your interest, as well as the contractor's. From the fee to the type of work to the length of time to other provisions for the project – everything should be documented, witnessed and approved by both parties. This will save both of you the trouble of haggling once the project reaches its conclusion.

5. Get involved. You may not be working on the project personally, but you need to keep track of progress and check in regularly. No matter how professional your contractor is, your presence is still needed from time to time to make sure that everything is in order. It will also help resolve certain issues early on, particularly if you have a difference in opinion.

6. Negotiate. You can always negotiate when it comes to the service fee. This is particularly true if there is not enough renovation or remodeling projects available. You should always consider your own budget and should try to get a price that your finances can cover. Home remodeling can be costly, particularly if you do not have a plan and if you are unwilling to negotiate.
